Redwood Bleachers
Tiered timber bleachers stepped down the cliffside for relaxed ocean watching before lunch seating.
Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur California has world class views. Nepenthe sits 800 feet above the ocean and we also have Cafe Kevah for brunch and lunch. We serve honest food over hot flames on heavy redwood terraces without table fees or reservation auctions.
“Can we get an ocean table without waiting two hours on Highway 1?”
Every seat along our open redwood terrace looks directly over the Pacific surf from eight hundred feet above sea level. We do not sell premium window reservations or auction the edge benches. Tables rotate on a steady walk-in roster from 11:30 AM onward. When coastal travelers arrive in the midday rush between 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM, the wait often reaches forty minutes.
While waiting, guests sit on the tiered redwood bleachers with coastal draft beer or coffee, watching red-tailed hawks ride the thermal lift off the Santa Lucia cliffs. If your party wants immediate terrace seating with zero wait, arrive at 11:15 AM before the gates swing open or come at 4:15 PM when lunch wraps and the dinner hearth is stoked.

Direct Highway 1 vehicle pull-off with parking apron. Northern access passes directly through Big Sur valley.
Afternoon fog frequently sits below the deck level, leaving the dining room under open blue sun.
“Is this a scenic highway stop or a real scratch kitchen?”
We cook over high-heat commercial broilers and open-flame grills. We do not thaw pre-formed patties or reheat commissary bags trucked down from San Jose. Our ground beef is ground coarse and seasoned simply with kosher salt and black pepper before hitting the steel grill for the signature Ambrosi burger. Sourdough loaves are baked fresh daily, and tomatoes come from Monterey County growers.
Lunch dishes run 13 to 50 USD per person. That ranges from a warm bowl of soup with artisan sourdough at 13 USD to our grilled steak and fresh Pacific catch at the top end. We do not rush tables to flip covers. When you order lunch, your food comes straight from the active line to your redwood table in cast iron or ceramic tableware.
Every meal at Nepenthe is served on heavy earthenware made to hold its heat against coastal Pacific breezes. This model shows the physical plate geometry designed for our outdoor terrace tables.
“What does an afternoon or evening meal actually cost per person?”
We publish our actual pricing upfront so you do not encounter surprises on your bill. Here are our operator-confirmed meal rates:
The exact total depends on what you choose to eat: a simple soup and bread plate at 13 USD sits at the entry point, while a dry-aged steak with Monterey pinot noir reaches 71 USD. You do not pay extra for an ocean-facing seat. All seating is included in the menu price.
“No table can purchase private ownership of the horizon. Lunch is thirteen to fifty dollars, dinner is thirty to seventy-one, and the Pacific is free.”
— Bill Fassett, Founder, 1947
“Who built this place, and how has it stayed independent since 1947?”
Lolly and Bill Fassett purchased the cabin site on this cliff in the late 1940s. They commissioned Rowan Maiden, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin, to design an open pavilion that would not compete with the Santa Lucia coastline. Maiden used massive heart-redwood logs pulled from local mills and native granite quarried from the surrounding canyons.
The doors opened on April 24, 1947. Nepenthe became a gathering hall for Big Sur artists and coastal travelers. Today, the third generation of the Fassett family runs the kitchen and dining terraces. The outdoor iron brazier hearth stays lit daily, warming visitors wrapped in wool blankets against the evening Pacific fog.
