We sit at 48510 Highway 1, eight hundred feet above the surf, welcoming walk-in diners and route inquiries daily.
Nepenthe is thirty miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea on California State Route 1. We operate walk-in open terrace dining, counter service at Cafe Kevah, and a direct inquiry desk for highway travelers and dining parties.
How do we know the road to Nepenthe is open before driving down, and what is the exact drive time from Monterey or San Simeon?
From Monterey or Carmel-by-the-Sea, you travel thirty miles south on California State Route 1. In fair conditions, the drive takes 45 to 55 minutes, passing Bixby Creek Bridge and Point Sur Lighthouse. The highway is a two-lane paved mountain pass cut directly into coastal granite cliffs.
From Cambria or San Simeon to the south, the distance is roughly sixty-five miles when the coastal pass is open. When Caltrans executes seasonal storm repairs near Limekiln or Regent's Slide, traffic from Southern California detours via Highway 101 to Salinas and Monterey before heading south on Route 1. We check Caltrans District 5 dispatch reports every morning at 7:00 AM. If you have any doubt about road blocks, call us at 831-667-2345 before you leave cell range.
Do you take reservations for the terrace rim tables, or will our party be turned away after driving two hours?
Nepenthe does not sell or hold reserved window tables. We have operated continuous walk-in terrace seating since 1947 when Lolly and Bill Fassett built the first redwood benches with architect Rowan Maiden. Every guest receives the exact same unhindered Pacific horizon whether ordering an afternoon sandwich or a multi-course dinner.
When you arrive, our host team puts your party on the live floor rotation. During peak lunch between 12:30 PM and 2:30 PM, waits typically run 20 to 45 minutes. While your table is prepared, you can sit on the open redwood bleachers, order a glass of Monterey County Pinot Noir or house coffee, and watch coastal fog clear over the water 800 feet below. We seat parties continuously until 10:00 PM.
Pricing parameters confirmed by our operator are straightforward and transparent: lunch runs 13 to 50 USD per person; dinner runs 30 to 71 USD per person; and Cafe Kevah brunch and lunch on the lower terrace runs 13 to 35 USD per person. What your final bill comes to depends on your dish choices, beverage selections, and whether you dine at the full-service Nepenthe tables or counter-order at Cafe Kevah.
What happens if heavy coastal fog rolls in or the ocean wind picks up while we are seated outside?
Big Sur weather is unpredictable and changes quickly. The marine layer frequently pulls across the cliff edge at four in the afternoon, dropping the air temperature fifteen degrees within twenty minutes.
We do not close the deck when fog arrives. Our outdoor wood-burning brazier hearth is stoked with hardwood every morning and burns continuously through twilight. We provide heavy wool blankets on the benches, and if offshore gusts exceed thirty knots, our team moves guests directly into the indoor heart-redwood dining hall around the massive Santa Lucia granite fireplace. Wear layers, bring a windproof jacket, and expect real Pacific weather.
Can parties of eight or more submit an inquiry in advance to coordinate dining timing or check highway logistics?
Yes. While regular parties of one to six are seated entirely by walk-in rotation on the day of arrival, parties of eight or more can submit an advance visiting inquiry using the form below or call 831-667-2345 directly.
Our operations team reviews submissions within 24 hours to confirm table capacity windows, discuss split checks, and inform you of any scheduled highway maintenance that might impact your arrival. We do not collect online payments, binding deposits, or credit card holds through this website; all dining purchases are settled individually at the table or counter.
